Kansas is leading the way in Film Education

Growing up, I heard “You should give up your dreams.” Other’s dictated, “You can never become an actor. All you can become in Kansas is a housewife. You have to go to New York or Hollywood to become an actress." Then the common hype is always,"You have to have connections. There’s nothing to do with film production in Kansas.”

On the contrary, Kansas has a rich and evolving history, deeply rooted in the state's unique landscapes and vibrant communities. It all started in the early 1900s when filmmakers were drawn to Kansas’s wide-open spaces and charming small towns, making it a popular spot for silent films and local storytelling. Throughout the mid-20th century, Kansas became known for Westerns and rural-themed movies that showcased the heartland’s spirit and values. The state also has ties to notable film figures like William S. Hart, a legendary actor and director who helped shine a spotlight on Kansas’s place in cinematic history. In recent years, Kansas has continued to embrace film-making through local festivals, production companies, and educational programs that celebrate its stories and culture. Today, Kansas’s film scene is lively and diverse, blending traditional storytelling with modern digital techniques, and the state remains proud of its contributions to the world of cinema.

Now, there are small production companies competing with the world for the attention of story telling and producing commercials. As of 2025, there is a college in Kansas that is growing annually and hoping to put Kansas on the map for actors, directors and writers.  

Wichita State University has joined the film race with their bachelor’s degree in film production and their bachelors in acting. Today, the well known college boasts a beautiful 330-acre campus and a cutting-edge Innovation Campus focused on research and community partnerships. The university offers a wide range of fields of study, including science, engineering, business, education, fine arts, health sciences, technology, and applied sciences. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, giving students the opportunity to learn, grow, and prepare for a successful future in a supportive and dynamic environment.

WSU’s story that dates back over a century. It began in 1895 as Fairmount College, founded by the Congregational Church with just 16 students and three teachers. From the start, the school was committed to providing a strong liberal arts and sciences education. The nickname "Shockers" comes from early students who earned money by shocking wheat—showing their hardworking spirit. In 1926, the city of Wichita took over support, renaming it the Municipal University of Wichita. This shift sparked growth and the addition of new programs, setting the stage for the university’s future expansion. Then, in 1964, it became Wichita State University and joined the state system, continuing to grow into a vibrant, Division I institution.

Every year since the film and acting programs began, there are students flocking to learn. This is no ordinary film production education where you only learn from books and watching others. This is a hands on experience. Directors, actors and writers team up to produce short films and small projects, giving them the taste of the industry.
